COMMON SENSE AND RESEARCH SENSE
When people discuss social issues with friends or family, they usually support their argument on the basis of their common sense and experience. Yet these two methods of making sense of the world are of limited use if we really want to tackle problems in a fresh, accurate and unbiased way.
What's wrong with common sense?
An alternative, and rather cynical, view of common sense is that it is just applying our perjudices - and, after all, your common sense may not be the same as mine, and who is to say that one is more accurate that the other?
What's wrong with experience?
The other way of approaching problems, through our own experience, is equally dubious, for everyone's experience is limited and memories or perceptions are distorted. Also my experiencies may, like my common sense, be very different from yours.
